I have received a copy of an Ebook in EPUB format. How do I open it and read the Ebook?
An EPUB file is a standard ebook format that can be read on most phones, tablets, computers, and ebook readers. You do not need special technical knowledge to use it.
iPhone or iPad — Apple Books
The easiest option is the Books app that comes with your device. Download the EPUB file and tap it. If prompted, choose Books or Open in Books. The book will be added to your Apple Books library for future reading.
Android Phone or Tablet — Google Play Books
A simple option is Google Play Books. Download the EPUB file to your device, then upload or open it with Google Play Books. Once added, the book will appear in your library and can be read like any other ebook.
Windows PC
Windows does not include a built-in EPUB reader, but several free ebook readers are available. Calibre is a popular choice. Install an EPUB-compatible reader, download the EPUB file, and open it with that program.
Kindle App or Kindle Device
Kindle does not normally open an EPUB file directly, but Amazon provides a free Send to Kindle service that converts EPUB files so they can be read in Kindle.
Amazon Send to Kindle
The easiest method is to visit the Send to Kindle page while signed into your Amazon account. Drag the EPUB file onto the page or select it from your computer or device and send it to your Kindle library. Amazon will process the file, and it should then appear in the Kindle Library associated with your account. You can read it using the Kindle app on a phone, tablet, or computer, or download it to a compatible Kindle device.
Sending by email: Amazon also assigns a unique email address to each Kindle device and Kindle app registered to your account. You can email the EPUB file as an attachment to this address, and Amazon will deliver the converted book to your Kindle library.
To find your Kindle email address, sign in to your Amazon account and go to Manage Your Content and Devices. Select Preferences, then look for Personal Document Settings. Under Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings, you will see the email addresses assigned to your registered Kindle devices and apps.
Amazon Manage Your Content and Devices
When sending a book by email, Amazon may require the message to come from an email address on your Approved Personal Document E-mail List. This setting is also found under Personal Document Settings. If necessary, add the email address you plan to use before sending the EPUB file.
For most readers, uploading the EPUB directly through the Send to Kindle webpage is the simplest method, since it avoids having to locate the Kindle email address or configure an approved sender.
Tip: Once you have added the book to Apple Books, Google Play Books, or Kindle, you generally do not need to repeat these steps. The book remains in your library just like other ebooks.
